Native son Eddie Hackett was asked to lay out this lesser-known course, part of the Belmullet Golf Club, in large part in order to attract tourism to this economically challenged but scenic part of northwest Ireland. After his work was done, Hackett was well pleased with what turned out to be his last design, stating that he felt "thrilled with the way the dramatic Belmullet Course has turned out," and expressed confidence "that ultimately there will be no better links in the country, or, I doubt, anywhere." Hackett's two nines together offer a nice contrast: the front nine are set off the beach within sight of Blacksod Bay, and the back are actually threaded among the dunes by the sea. Careful shot placement is necessary to escape being faced with blind tee shots, and to negotiate the formidable doglegs. Given the topography, many players will opt to rent a cart.
The Enniscrone Golf Club is situated on a headland over Killala Bay on the Moy Estuary. Rosses Point is the big name hereabouts, but the Dunes course, named for the towering mounds of sand that dominate the setting, should not be missed by any golfer visiting the area. And the area has a great deal to offer, from the spectacular Scurmore Beach to the peaks of the Nephin Beg Range in one direction and those of the Ox Mountains in the other. Eddie Hackett expanded the club's original nine to a full eighteen in the 1970s, and Donald Steel added another nine some time later. These twenty-seven holes allow for a wide range of different combinations. The Dunes particularly rewards good drives, since the tees tend to be raised (which also makes for some picturesque vistas). Any golfer, however, will get pleasure from playing in such pleasant environs.
The Golf Club Achensee was already founded in 1934 and is situated on 950 m sea level directly between the beautiful Achensee and the majestic towering Karwandel Mountains. Here the golfer will not only find restful quietude, but also the special Tyrolese flair with sportsmanship, coziness and folksiness.
Barsebäck Golf & Country Club is widely considered one of Europe's best and most beautiful golf venues. As early as the 1980s, Jack Nicklaus, who has won more golf majors than anyone else, praised Barsebäck's beautiful location and the high quality of its golf courses. A great deal has happened since then! We have hosted 13 European tour events where golfers such as Annika Sörenstam, Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie have all echoed Nicklaus's words. In 2003 the Masters Course at Barsebäck hosted the Solheim Cup while this summer, July 2010, Barsebäck will host the Swedish Team Championships for both men and women. Many of the best golfers in Sweden will compete for there prestigious titles.
